Save the Persecuted Christians Applauds Bipartisan Congressional Action on Syria Sanctions Oversight

Christian NewsWire | Dec. 19, 2025

WASHINGTON, Dec. 19, 2025 /Christian Newswire/ — Save the Persecuted Christians (SPC) commends the 134 House Republicans who this morning sent a letter to President Trump demanding strong oversight assurances as the United States moves forward with the repeal of the Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act, included in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2026, signed into law last night.

SPC and our allies have worked tirelessly to ensure Syria’s minorities are protected and included as equal citizens in the new Syria, post-Assad.

Throughout this month, SPC Executive Director Dede Laugesen has been in Washington, DC, meeting with numerous Members of Congress to advocate for Syria’s vulnerable ethnic and religious minorities. These discussions have focused on the ongoing atrocities they face and the critical need for robust oversight mechanisms to hold President Ahmed al-Sharaa (al-Jolani) and the provisional government accountable for any crimes against minorities, whether from within or outside the regime.

We are grateful that many in Congress share our concerns and have taken decisive action. The letter from 134 Republican lawmakers underscores the importance of enforceable guarantees to safeguard religious freedom and human rights as sanctions are eased.

“While the repeal of the Caesar Act opens opportunities for Syria’s recovery, vigilance remains essential,” said Dede Laugesen. “Syria’s Christians and other minorities have endured unimaginable persecution. We must ensure the new government upholds promises of equality and protection. SPC will continue advocating for accountability and justice.”

Save the Persecuted Christians remains committed to supporting Syria’s persecuted communities and urging U.S. leaders to prioritize their safety in this transitional era.
